Pokemon RPG Early Generations

Overview

Pokémon RPG early Generations  is a comprehensive multiplayer online RPG mod for Warcraft 3, developed with a small but dedicated team of four. My role as the systems designer was at the heart of this project, focusing on designing and implementing the core gameplay systems, mechanics, and overall structure of the game.

Working alongside a level designer/artist/secondary developer, an employer providing leadership approval, and a programmer responsible for the save system, I took on nearly every other aspect of the project. This included designing Pokémon abilities, combat mechanics, class systems, and the overall progression structure.

The game is a reimagining and expansion of Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal, featuring:

  • Over 250 Pokémon and 200 moves recreated within the Warcraft 3 engine.

  • MOBA-inspired combat mechanics, providing engaging and dynamic battles.

  • 20+ hours of playable content, covering the entire Johto and Kanto campaigns.

  • Raid content where players can team up to defeat challenging bosses.

  • 15+ classes, allowing players to specialize in certain Pokémon types and gameplay styles.

Balancing nostalgia with innovative mechanics was essential to the experience. I meticulously structured the gameplay to provide a blend of familiarity and fresh excitement for players, all while ensuring scalability and replayability through the class and raid systems. My approach emphasized strong communication and systems thinking, ensuring each element of the game contributed meaningfully to the overall vision.
